He suffered a deeply abusive childhood at the hands of his alcoholic mother and aged stepfather, causing him to fall off the rails. By age 16, he was burgling shops, nearly killed a police officer, received a criminal conviction, was expelled from school, and had attempted suicide twice.
But he soon turned his life around, and by age 20 he had joined the Fire Service. Struggling with the combination of working and studying, he bought a book on memory to help him pass his exams. And just eight months later, he came 4th at the World Memory Championships.
