Kenny is from a small village in the Scottish Borders. He graduated from Queen Margaret’s College, Edinburgh in 2000 with a BA (Hons with distinction) in acting, the first from his college to win the BBC radio “Carleton Hobbs” Bursary award. He spent his first year as an actor at the BBC in London, working exclusively in radio drama. He won ''Best Male Performance" at the VOX Awards, 2017.

To date, he has performed in over 200 BBC radio plays, often playing several characters in a production, which has provided him with extraordinary versatility of age and accents.
